New Music Tuesdays. Even though fewer and fewer people are even buying music on physical media like CDs, we still know what New Music Tuesdays are. Even iTunes has a section for it.

But why are new albums released on Tuesdays?

Personally I always thought it was just simple logistics. Movies are released on Fridays to take advantage of Date Night Friday and Saturday and family-friendly matinee weekend crowds. Some movies are released on Wed to give it even more time to gain traction. So I just thought that between what was left over, Tuesday seemed better than Monday and Thursday.

As NPR, points out, I’m sort of right.

One explanation is Billboard magazine, which publishes its charts on Wednesdays. If you release an album on a Tuesday, then you get the maximum seven days of sales counted toward your total (including a full weekend).

The other is inertia — distributors are all set up to shuttle stock out to stores over the weekend and on Mondays. Most only do runs a couple of times a week. Read more…

What do you think? Do you have another theory as to why new music is released on Tuesdays? Do you even remember the last time you went to a music store on a Tuesday to buy a new album? Do you even know what albums are? 🙂
