The White Stripes released a statement via their website on Feb 2, 2011 indicating that they will no longer be recording or performing as The White Stripes.

Personally, I think it’s always a little weird when a band releases a statement after a long hiatus saying that they’re breaking up. After all, Icky Thump was released in 2007. (Although to be fair, Under Great White Northern Lights came out just last year. )

Technically, you don’t have to say anything about breaking up if you don’t want to. Just don’t record. Just don’t perform. Then when the feeling moves you, you start back up again. No biggie.

However, on the other hand, making the statement does provide a sense of closure. For the band and for the fans. It squashes months or years of asking “When are they going to release a new album or go on tour again?”

I like how they ended their statement by saying, “The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

That pretty much sums it up. Good show.
