Beyond the Guitar Jam

The Musicians Workshop is more than a jam or a song circle. It’s mission is to provide a safe environment for the aspiring performer who wants to receive encouraging feedback. Regular members have conquered their fears to become solid performers in less time than they thought possible.

Described as the “Toastmasters for Musicians”, The Musicians Workshop is for musicians of ALL ages and skill levels to Practice the Art of Performing™ and share encouraging feedback with their peers.

Many people have performed for the FIRST TIME EVER in front of people at The Musicians Workshop! Additionally, local and touring singer-songwriters visit us to share what they’re working on and offer advice from the road and the stage.

Four Formats

1.) PERFORMANCE FORMAT: This is where is all started. People are encouraged to prepare 2-3 songs to perform as a mini-set in front of the group as their ‘audience’. The songs can be covers or originals, but you’re encouraged to play from memory if you can. Or at least work up to it, because this is your opportunity to practice more than just performing the songs but also addressing the audience, tellings stories, your posture and everything else that is related to the performance.

I learned about the Guitar Pull when watching Heartworn Highways (1976) feat. Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, a very young Steve Earle and more.

2.) GUITAR PULL FORMAT: Originating in and around Nashville, the Guitar Pull is less formal where we take turns playing songs, telling stories and talking about every aspect of music.

3.) OPEN MIC FIELD TRIP: Special events where we all attend the same Open Mic, supporting each other and bringing the experience of The Musicians Workshop into the real world!

4.) SHOWCASE: An official billed show at a local club featuring contributing members of The Musicians Workshop and Special Guest Artists!

Special Guests

Whenever we can, we try to schedule local musicians and touring performers to be our Featured Musical Guests. Their experiences performing, songwriting and recording is an invaluable resource! And they always remember what it was like starting out! If you’d like to be a featured guest, please contact me!

In addition, we are often blessed by having local musicians as our regular members! These good folks become our Artists in Residence such as Mike Ryan, Rob Higgs from Addieville and Amber Dutton. Please support their music!

Schedule

The Musicians Workshop takes place once a month, usually on a Sunday afternoon, and is open to the public. There is a small voluntary recommended donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Just pay what you please.

To join in the fun, check out the photos on Facebook, then RSVP on Meetup.com or by contacting me directly!
