I’m a Guitar Student and I Always Will Be

While guitar tapping is nothing new, it’s undergone a significant evolution over the years. If you’ve kept up with the technique, you may have heard the name Kaki King.

Rolling Stone Magazine called her “Van Halen Meets Bootsy Collins” in their 2007 Guitar Gods issue.

More recently, she’s appearing in a new Gap ad campaign.

With the short hair, she looks sort of like a more talented Justin Bieber, if JB played the guitar much much better. But Kaki has been playing music since she was 4 years old. And, not surprisingly eschewed the guitar for the drums for a long while which would explain a little bit of her fascination with her current technique.

But the thing that I most found interesting was the last little bit in this interview when talking about being hailed as a “guitar god”.

She said, “I am a guitar student and I will be for the rest of my life. There is too much to learn in a lifetime. There is something beautiful and challenging and humbling about that, that I don’t want to let go of.”

If you’re one of MY students, you’ve heard me say something similar. Any HONEST musician will tell you that they will always be a student of music. If you approach your music, and any other aspect of life, the same way, everything and everyone becomes an opportunity for learning something new.
